Tortola and The Virgin Gorda

Our next stop was The British Virgin Islands. We ported in Tortola. We took a 30 minute ferry to The Virgin Gorda and The Baths, where there were amazing large boulders the size of cars and two story houses. The place was amazing. When we got there it was a little overcast. We got a chance to explore the openings in the cave and got a chance to dip into the water.

The ferry ride to The Virgin Gorda was about $38 dollars per person if you book it yourself. To spend time at the baths and the beach was $3 per person.

While we were there we got a chance to check out the different beaches in the area. It was a nice day out for a while until it started to pour but it was a relaxing time at the beach. If you plan to go, go early, we did not get the opportunity to go to The Baths, the line to enjoy the area was an hour and a half long. To be honest the sites were gorgeous and it was a nice break from the ship.

Driving Through Saint Thomas

Our next stop was Saint Thomas, we decided to get to shore and book a tour with the local guides there. Sometimes on cruises, it is much more cost efficient to do this just because certain shore excursions will cost more depending on the destination. We decided to do a driving tour of the small island in a taxi that reminded me of jeepneys in the Philippines. The guide took us to the scenic lookouts through the the Island and the few land marks there.

Overlooking Magen Bay Beach atop Top of The Mountain Look out

We passed by Blackbeard’s castle heading to the Top of the Mountain Lookout that overlooked Magen Bay Beach. You can see several nearby islands from the lookout.

Our last stop by Magen Bay Beach which cost $5 per person to stay and enjoy the Sun. We took decided to pass on the beach and head back to the boat. The whole excursion with the guide was about 45-60 minutes because of the different lookouts that we stopped at. In all honestly, the island is extremely small and there is not of lot of things to do there.

A few tips to keep in mind on Cruises. Shore excursions are great if there is a lot of do on the island but it is also expensive if you go with those planned by the ship. It is possible to book excursions right off the boat just make sure to do a little research before hand and check on what is available at the site. I was a little surprised by the cost to stay at the beach but then again, I live in Hawaii and it is the same for some of the high traffic locations like Hanauma Bay on Oahu. But in the Caribbean, many of these islands main source of income is tourism so that most beach will have an entrance free. One of the benefits of going with the ships shore excursions is that you might not have to wait in long lines but they are a lot more expensive, sometimes 3-4 times more expensive than if you booked the excursions yourself.

Stopping in Puerto Rico

In December, we went on a cruise with family to the Eastern Caribbean. Our first stop was Puerto Rico and we were out to see for two days before arriving. We ported in Puerto Rico in the late afternoon. We got a chance to walk around old San Juan. A lot of places were closed because of the holidays but we got a chance to do a walking tour and take in a few sights before sundown. The part of the city that we got a chance to tour was full of colorful buildings, houses, and cool Spanish Style architecture with cobblestone streets.

Hotel Del Convento

For this trip, I packed a lot of comfortable basics that I could dress up and down depending on the day and activity. One of the most versatile pieces that I brought on this trip are these pair of joggers from Uniqlo that I picked up last year as a fun purchase. I like the fact that I can throw on a tee shirt and sneakers and go for an adventure or I can throw on a nice blouse and heels and some nice accessories for a night out on the town or date night.

I really enjoyed our short stay in Puerto Rico. I would not mind going back for an extended stay. Thanks again for reading. Let me know what you think.
