Cool, Light, & Throwbacks

I am a child of the 80’s. A kid who grew up latchkey and dreaming.  I grew up on PBS educational shows, afternoon cartoons, fruits and butter sugar sandwiches.

I looked forward to Jem and the Holograms. The music made me want to sing, the fashion made me want to draw. I finally saw the updated Hollywood take on a childhood favorite. I was disappointed because it was not what I was accustomed to but I get it. My version of Jem was full of adventure, fashion, and it was not so much the fame that made me interested, it was her character, her true self, and most of all, the shows talked about charity, family, and belief is self. The movie had all of that but I was taken a back by the update.  The movie needed more time, more character development and to stay true to its 80’s roots. For me,  Jem was epic, it was a story that allowed dreams to flourish— colored hair, fashion, and changing the world. That was Jem, for my childhood self, she was inspiring.

Speaking of fashion, I have been shopping my closet and building my basics capsule. I found this light knit sweater dress from my closet clean out last week and thought that it was perfect to pair with an open front light summer cardigan.  I like knit dresses for easy dressy mornings.

I paired it with some espadrilles I picked up years ago from Diesel. I love how the raffia is brought all the way to the ankle of the sandal. It’s a great mix of leather and raffia. I added a pop of color with some gradient tassle earrings which I’m currently obssessing over.

Summer Solstice and Denim Ease

20180622_131243

Outfit posts have been far and few between. With Spring ending and the Summer Solstice a few days ago.  I felt inspired to share one of my go-to outfits for warmer months. Linens shirts and denim skirts have an ease to them that’s perfect for warm summer days.  Their natural fibers allow you to stay cool under the Summer sun and staying cool is a must in Hawaii.

Lately, I have really been loving this pairing.  I own a few denim skirts and I like the structure and the pleated waste design of this one. It’s a break from the classic denim cut popularized 70’s and 80’s.

Where the Sunflowers Grow

img_5107

For years, We have planned to go and check out the sunflower fields. This past weekend, we made it a point to check them out in bloom in the Waialua. They stood tall against the backdrop of a very clear and blue sky. They were amazingly beautiful. img_5151

It was nice to take in some fresh air and enjoy the beautiful yellow blooms. We could spot them on the road while driving to the Sunflower fields.

Natural Inspiration at McBryde Gardens

img_3965Kauai from the plane

img_4009

A month ago we took a trip to Kauai.  Some of the first stops on the island was the Kauai Coffee company to check out their Fall blends of coffee. And go check out Glass Beach were the Sand is made out of pieces of glass that have been polished by the salt water.

img_4022Glass Beachimg_4031

Our first day there on Kauai, we wanted to visit McBryde Gardens. Originally, part of the Sugar Plantation that my great grandfather worked on when he first arrived to the islands, McBryde today is a research institute for the study of endangered plants from all over  the world. It is home to the Breadfruit Institute and other plants that are being researched and cultivated to help with world hunger and to find cures for various diseases. Also, it is home to endangered plants that are being studied to save them from extinction.

We had the opportunity to check out beautiful plants and explore the gardens.

I decided to keep it cool today with this romper that doubles as a babydoll dress. I love its hidden features and its roomy pockets. It came in handy as we walked around and visited the booths to see the food and wares from different vendors.

I’m currently obsessing over this Cult Gaia bag that was a blogger favorite last year. I love its design aesthetic and construction. It is a such a perfect classic Summer bag.

Thanks again for reading. Take care and blessings.

I know it seems I’ve dropped of the face of the Earth a few months ago and I should have left you a letter. The past couple of months have been life changing for me. I’ve been a true believer in the idea that everything has it’s time in our life. Our goals and our dreams have their moments in the sun. I’ve have two passions in life, Fashion and Academia. Sometimes one takes precedence over the other. These two things cannot exist together although I have tried to make it work. I have taken a step back from Fashion and really rethink my place in that space. As a kid, I dreamt of obtaining my Ph.D and recently I got accepted into the program that I applied to. It’s a dream come true and it’s going to take a lot of my time.

img_3016

So where does this blog go from here. I do not plan on leaving it entirely. I do believe it is still my creative space and I still do love fashion. I will try to post as often as I can and share more of me, my style and my lifestyle.

img_3020So I continue to invite you to walk with me through this journey of Fashion and Academia. I greatly appreciate those of you who have supported me through the years.

Road Trip on the Great Ocean Road

IMG_8901

One of the highlights of our trip to Melbourne was the Great Ocean Road. Stretching 51 miles from Torquay all the way to Warnambool in Western Australia, it features historical towns, sightseeing, great food, and many activities along the way. A week is not enough to take in everything that the Great Ocean Road has to offer. My suggestion is to do it as a road trip and to stop along the way and enjoy as much as you can. The trip down the coast is beautiful so take your time. There is so much to do.aquino

The Great Ocean Road was built was World War I Veterans coming back home from the War. It provided them with employment at the same time it allowed the smaller towns on the coastline to connect with others.  The road has many stops for sightseeing and learning about historical sites throughout the road.  One of our first stops was the city of Lorne. We got a chance to visit the Lorne pier and enjoy amazing food at the Lorne Pier Seafood Restaurant.

We also spent some time checking out the different beaches, lookouts, and ended our first day on the Great Ocean Road with the amazing Twelve Apostles. img_2199

On our second day, we checked  out the Split Point and Otway Light Houses and relax and chatted in a few cafes along the way.
