Sweaters & Interesting Details

Hawaii is experiencing a cold spell. I really love colder weather here. I get the opportunity to wear sweaters and get bundled up. I completely adore sweaters with unexpected details; bow prints, polka dots, stripes or distressed details.

I have been watching a show on Netflix called Meteor Garden. I’m completely inspired by the fashion of the characters and all the different sweaters they use. I love all the different details from hooks, to distressing, to patterns, and interesting color combinations.

I have had this sweater in my collection for a while I love its distressed and unraveled sides, the soft yarn used, and the slouchy look. I paired it with dressy jogger pants and an asymmetric shirt.

What kind of details you like on your sweaters?

Thanks again for reading.

Michelle

Origami and Gemstones

Lately, I’ve been inspired to play with the pieces that are in my closet and use them in unexpected ways. This top was a end of summer purchase that is perfect year round.

rumi1

The blouse reminds me of origami that  you can fold  and transform it into something beautiful. It’s a versatile piece that can be thrown over a shift dress, a pair of pants or skirt. I like that it’s great for layering for cooler weather but perfect for spring and the summer.

rumi2

I like the way it looks backwards with the high neckline and the cinch at the waist to create a structured kimono look over a gemstone colored skirt.

Fall Hues

I love the colors of Fall, the chill in the air, the taste of pumpkin flavored everything. I miss the Northeast. I really wanted to go this year to pick apples, watch the leaves turn into beautiful oranges, yellows, and reds but that will be reserve for another time. It’s still very warm here, I miss when Hawaii weather got so chilly that when you went out into the morning you could see the condensation of your breath in the air when you spoke.

To celebrate Fall colors, I decided to wear what the Pantone Color Institute designated as the Fall 2016 colors. I love this color palette.

Lately

wpid-img_20151022_165247.jpg

Lately, I’ve been posting outfits more often on Instagram apart from my blog posts. I’m not into contests but I found this more of a challenge to force me to wear my clothes and be a little creative with what I have in the closet.

wpid-img_20151014_182302.jpg

I’ve been a huge fan of Fighting Eel for as long as I can remember. My introduction to the brand was Alex the owner of Second Skin when it was at Ward Warehouse. Alex had great fashion sense and choice. I got to know him and the brands he carried and one of them happened to have been Fighting Eel. I love the modern cut of the dresses and tops and the idea that two local designers were doing what they loved and getting attention from famous people for it. I was amazed. I loved their vision for the brand, the fact that each piece could be worn anywhere depending on each wearers personality. I liked the fact that the brand gave me a sense of local identity without trying to fit into flower print island fashion which was not my style.

As I attempt to complete 30 days of Fighting Eel, I want to remember the guy who introduced me to the brand. Despite the fact that we lost him a few years back, the contest reminds me of our conversations and the friendship built on Fighting Eel.

Summer Time: Banyans and Bananas

banyansandbananas

Hey Everyone,

Hope you are having a great week and looking forward to an amazing weekend. Lately, I’ve gone back to drawing again, mostly drawing up designs for stuff I want to make with my sewing machine. I’ve been thinking of maybe doing some DIY posts but I’m not really sure yet. I need your help with making that decision so let me know in the comments if you would like to see that go up on this blog.

It’s been very humid lately with temperatures in the 90’s. Summer is definitely approaching. It’s summer days like this when I feel like throwing on a graphic tee (just like this banana design from J. Crew), a pair of shorts, and some gladiator sandals. This is my summer time uniform just because it’s so easy and effortless.

I hope you have a great weekend. Have some fun in the sun.

Pretty in Pink: Sparkle, Pearls and Pink Tulle

Hello Everyone!

I hope you are having an amazing week. The week is almost over and the day of love, hearts and passion is just around the corner.

I had a talk with my aunt the other day about my childhood dreams and she reminded that before I even started school, she remembers me loving to dress up to put on fashion shows or practicing pirouette and plié movements in ballet performances on the staircase landing of my grandmother’s house. She knew back then that I had always loved fashion and the arts. It is a dream that has never gone away. She reminded me that my first love was always and is always with me today and that it’s never really to late to follow my dreams. Perhaps the true meaning of love is just that, to follow what makes our soul the happiest and our dreams within reach.

As the holiday of love, humanity, passion, care, and romantic gestures comes, perhaps the one thing we forget is that the person who started it in history followed his dream of sharing love with people. We often forget that the holiday is far more than gestures of love with a significant other, shapes of hearts, candy, and flowers but rather gestures of love to human kind and to follow our passions despite judgement.

To celebrate my love for the arts and to remind me that my dreams are just within reach, is a tulle skirt, pearls and some sparkle. Perfect for an evening to celebrate dreams, wishes, and hopes.

Thank you again reading. I hope you have an amazing weekend full of joy and happiness. And don’t forget dreams are always within reach.

Where All the Flowers Bloom: Floral Skirt and Polka Dot Shirt

blossoms9

Happy Tuesday Everyone!

While going to the grocery store the other day, I was completely inspired by the beautiful orange flowers on this wall. They reminded of spring and summer weather and a floral skirt I bought last year that is vibrant and so full of life. I could not wait to go home and play with different pairings for the skirt. After some thought, I decided to pair if with a polka dot button down that accents the magenta and orange orchid design. It was a little rainy today, and the floral design reminded me that spring is just around the corner.

Let’s Chill: Sweatshirts and Jeans

IMG_6094Hawaii’s winter weather is nothing like the one you find on the continent. Snow only covers our highest mountains for a short period of time. This winter has been wet and windy and definitely unpredictable. The temperatures have dropped to the low 60’s and mid 50’s here.  “Cold” for Hawaii standards if you ask me. When the weather drops, it’s definitely time to bring out the sweaters and the sweatshirts.  Recently, sweatshirts and jeans have been my uniform for the “colder” weather in Hawaii.  It keeps me warm, cozy, and comfortable on chilly days. I like to pair mine with jeans that have interesting textures and prints and keep it interesting by layering necklaces over them.Sweatshirts

Downtown Adventure: Modern Mod Dress and Simple Crossbody

Vintage9

Hey Everyone,

Hope you are having a great week. This past weekend, I celebrated the two year anniversary of A Pair of Shoes for Everyday. It’s been a great year of learning and growing but I could not help but celebrate the small successes.

To celebrate this little blog that can, we decided for a Downtown Honolulu adventure. For several years, Downtown Honolulu has gone through major transformations, there are so many cool places to eat and lounge as well as shop. We decided to checkout a new location for Marukame Udon and Tempura before checking out the different boutiques.  I like the atmosphere and character of downtown; the different architectural styles, the red bricked buildings, the patches of cobble stone walkways, the older buildings of China Town intermingled with soaring skyscrapers and the small welcoming gardens for people taking a break.  Everyone is always coming or going but on holidays, it is quite peaceful.

After lunch, we walked down the street to check out the boutiques that have sprung up near the landmark Hawaii Theatre. On days like this, I like to pop into Fighting Eel to see their latest line, check the stock  of Jeffrey Campbell shoes at Homecoming Boutique, new artful accessories at Ginger13 or stop by Let Them Eat Cupcakes to pick up my favorite flavors. Today however, I decided to check out Barrio Vintage to peruse their selection of vintage finds and check out Cake Envy for their amazing cheesecakes.

Recently, my go to purse is this cream Tribeca Hudson Street Crossbody. I’m rarely ever interested in handbags or bags for that matter but I picked this up a couple of months ago to make it easier to carry all the essentials. It was the bag of choice as I ran out the door for our downtown adventure.  It’s so easy to pair with anything, perfect for days you want your hands to be free, and great for shopping and running errands.

For the Love of Denim: Pencil Skirts and Light Sweaters

Denim

Happy Wednesday Everyone!

There is something completely nostalgic about denim skirts. Before I found the perfect pair of jeans, I found the perfect denim skirt.  It has become a staple in my wardrobe as long as I can remember. I have them in different cuts and washes. Recently, I have been looking for one in a high waisted pencil cut in dark wash and I have been eye-ing this one from Zara for a while now.  I could not help but get it when it went on sale in December. It is the perfect blend of feminine and tough. The classic pencil cut and the dark wash allow the skirt to be worn with many different pairings. I can not wait to find more ways to wear this skirt.
