Preparing for Honolulu Fashion Week

The past few months has been a blur for many Honolulu Fashion Week participants. From preparing looks to the runway, model selections, marketing and advertising, photo spreads, it is by far the busiest month in Hawaii for fashion. This year the list of designers, stylists and fashionistas are both local and international with the likes of Marissa Webb and Younhee Park to Project Runway Finalists Kini Zamora and Ari South to local designers like Allison Izu and Summer Shiigi of Tentomorrow.

About a week ago, I had a chance to interview Summer Shiigi as she prepares for her runway show for Honolulu Fashion Week. Our interview took place at The Collective  at Ward Warehouse.

The Collective is made of Summer and her design partner and mentor Allison Izu.

In our chat, Summer mentioned that she designs with her customer in mind. Her background in retail, merchandising, e-commerce and styling informs the decisions she’s made for her line.  The wearability and comfort of her pieces speak to women on the go and a woman who wants to feel good in the clothes that she is in. The line reflects an eclectic style where a person can find a piece that works with their wardrobe.

Summer’s inspiration for her  Fall/Winter collection snow covered mountains. Translating ideas of Winter Wonderland for Hawaii weather. Because Hawaii is sunny all year round, Summer uses colors and textures in her line  that are layer friendly. It is Hawaiian sun meeting  metropolitan city Life.  The results are pieces that work from day to night for Hawaii and the continent.

Summer likes to work with modern and vintage style esthetics. Taking classic styles and adding a modern twist. Button up shirts are reimagined with panels of chiffon, a tuxedo shirt is revamped with softer flowing fabric, and a asymmetric top gets a ruffled trim.

When asked about her style icons, Summer named a few of  Hollywood’s most iconic fashionistas with the likes  Carry Bradshaw, Olivia Palermo, Victoria Beckham, and Audrey Hepburn to name a few. She looks to them as inspirations for her style and it informs her line of clothing.

Summer’s line is named TenTomorrow. She stated in our interview that 10 a.m. in the morning and 10 p.m. at night are times when she feels the most productive. Tomorrow alludes to promising future. And her future is definitely promising, you can now find her collection at Nordstrom Hawaii. Her dream of owning her own shop  a few years back has come to fruition and she believes it is with the help of  and support of Hawaii’s people.

This year’s Honolulu Fashion Week started week was Friday to Saturday at the Hawaii Convention Center is featuring Runway Shows throughout the three days as well as a Marketplace to check out local designers. If you did not get a chance to go check it out, you can find details at  Honolulu Fashion Week website. You can also catch Summer’s designs on the Local Lux Runway Show.

Thanks again for reading. I’ll be doing more features on the blog about Honolulu Fashion Week so stay tuned.

Hello All,

In the next few posts, I wanted to highlight a few of Hawaii’s Fashion Professionals in celebration of Honolulu Fashion Month.  Every November, Hawaii’s top designers, stylists and fashionistas gather to celebrate the talented people who make Hawaii Fashion what it is today. Please tune into my blog and read up on the amazing people who put Hawaii Fashion on the map.

Metallics are in this Fall. This shirt is from Ari South a locale designer who inspires a lot of Hawaii youth to reach for their dreams.  She’s one of Hawaii’s contestants who became a finalist on Project Runway. To highlight the shirt, I choose a subtle rose gold skirt and kept the shoes neutral.

In Attendance: Honolulu Fashion Week

This week fashion took the center stage in Honolulu at the Second Annual Honolulu Fashion Week. I went to opening night to check out the fashion shows as well the work of up and coming designers in Honolulu. I got a chance to mingle with friends in the Fashion Industry and check out their new collections. It’s always refreshing to find new brands on the islands that speak to my style esthetic. I hope to share more with you in upcoming posts. But for now, here’s a few pictures I snapped while I was there.
